eSIM cards – The next big thing after notch-display ?

In the final post of #MyFriendAlexa series, I am going to touch a Tech topic. Its been a while since I have written something about tech. When hitechup was operational, it was a routine affair for me. Anyways, in this post, I am going to talk about eSIM cards.

So, what is an eSIM card? eSIM card stands for embedded SIM (Subscriber Identity Module). It replaces your physical SIM cards. Though this technology is still at its nascent stage, it may become the talk of the town, like notch displays. The concept of notch display became mainstream with the launch of iPhone X.

An eSIM card is an integrated chip that is embedded in the device and cannot be removed from the device. It is formally known as Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC). It is a re-writable chip and is equipped with M2M (Machine to Machine) and Remote Provisioning capabilities.  This feature eliminates the requirement of plastic SIM cards.

It would be interesting to see whether eSIM cards become the trending topic of the smartphone industry or not. Only two service providers support eSIM cards in India – Airtel and Jio.
