There are two themes for World Yoga Day 2019, UN (United Nations) declared the theme as “Yoga for Climate Action” and the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy), Government of India, declared the theme for Yoga as “Yoga for Heart“.

The word yoga is derived from Sanskrit and means to join or unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness. It is an ancient Indian practice that provides a holistic approach to health and well-being. Yoga consists of breath control, meditation, body postures and spiritual practices.

Yoga for IT Professionals

IT Professionals are sitting in front of the computers for long hours cause stress around eyes, shoulders, neck and spinal cord region. In this section of the post, I am going to share some easy exercises that will help to stay fit.

Eyes

  • Sit on a chair and keep your eyes wide open. Look at the roof and blink 10 times. Close your eyes for 10 seconds. Do this exercise once every 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Rub your palms and place them on your eyes. Keep your hands on the eyelids till it reaches deep inside the eyes. This will relieve stress from the eye muscles.

Body

  • Rotate your head clockwise, anticlockwise, up and down, left and right on 3 to 5 counts, making 2 sets.
  • Place your hands on your shoulders and rotate it 10 times clockwise and anticlockwise.
  • Sit straight on a chair. Twist your body towards the right side till you are able to see your back. Relax and then twist your body towards the left side.

Yoga and Diet – Things you should know

Diet is one of the essential things of yoga. Experts recommend that one should begin their yoga session after about 2 hours from their main meal. Doctors say the food we eat gets reflected both in our appearance, as well as in our well being. So, we should consume that food that prevents illness and discomfort.

But the question is, what should we eat? What does healthy food refer to? Experts suggest that fruits and vegetables containing vitamins and fibre should be present in your daily meal. Moreover, they also say that any food that is fit for consumption in natural form is good for health.

Despite knowing this fact, many people try to eat as little as possible, as they believe that eating less is inversely proportional to fitness, the less you eat – the more fit you are. While doing so, they forget that their body isn’t getting the adequate amount of nutrition. On the other hand, some people believe that if they overeat healthy food, they will get more benefit. This is not true. Stop eating once the hunger goes away, or, even better, stop before reaching the saturated state. This will help you to get rid of fatigue.

Next question is how often should a healthy person eat? The best answer is you should eat whenever you are hungry. Don’t skip meals. Just pay attention to what and how much you are eating. The nutrients present in the food is the energy source of our body. This is why, yoga trainers advise practitioners to have a balanced diet, mainly based on natural food. This protects them from toxins and contributes towards a healthy mind and soul, which is one of the main goals of yoga.

As a final remark, when carrying out constant yoga practices it is important, in order to reach your goals, to meditate both on what you are doing to your own body, as a direct consequence of the food you are eating, and to what level you respond to your soul’s and mind’s needs.
